Mailwell and Apple Mail

Apple Mail is free, it’s already on your Mac, and it syncs with your iPhone. If it does what you need, keep it.

Mailwell is for when you want more out of your inbox. Inbox tabs for every provider, profiles to keep work and personal apart, a keyboard shortcut for everything, people in search, and sign-in codes you can copy from the notification. Fastmail and Kagi Mail connect over JMAP, so new mail shows up right away. Both apps keep your mail on your Mac.

Mailwell and Mimestream

Mimestream is a lovely native app, and if every account you have is Gmail it’s hard to beat. It talks to Gmail’s own API, so labels and Gmail features feel at home.

Mailwell is for when you also have iCloud, Fastmail, Microsoft 365 or anything else, and want them in one inbox. Both are native Mac apps, both keep your mail on your Mac, and the monthly price is the same. Mailwell also has a lifetime license while it’s new.

Mailwell and Superhuman

Superhuman is built for speed and for teams, with a lot of AI, and it runs on almost everything. It works with Gmail and Outlook accounts.

Mailwell is a native Mac app that’s fast because your mail is stored and searched on your Mac. It works with any provider, costs a third as much each month, and its AI is off until you turn it on. If you need a phone app or team features, Superhuman is the better pick today.

Mailwell and Spark

Spark is free to start and runs on every platform, with team features like shared drafts. To send push notifications and run those features, Spark keeps your sign-in on its servers. For IMAP accounts that’s your password, by Readdle’s own description.

Mailwell keeps everything on your Mac. Passwords and sign-ins live in the macOS Keychain, and the app talks straight to your provider. It’s Mac only, so if you need Windows or Android, Spark covers more.

Mailwell also checks your license with Polar and looks for updates. AI is off by default. If you turn it on, summaries go to Apple Intelligence or to the service your own key is for.
